Obesity and Overweight, occurs in the blink of an eye.

Heck! there are lots of delicious temptations all around us! The difficulty lies in shedding the unwanted pounds and keeping them off for good.

We all wish silently that “we could eat what we want, and never be obese or overweight” .

Obesity is a challenge. Nearly two-thirds of ADULTS in the world over, are Obese. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in young children and quadrupled in adolescents.

Unhealthy snacks are everywhere . This is because they are so accessible and cheap.

Furthermore , the average citizen, finds organic foods expensive.

Secondly, no one wants to take the time to whip up a healthy meal or a healthy smoothie.

Obesity and Overweight Symptoms and Side Effects

  • Double chin, bloated, pale and rounder face. 
  • Increased waist circumference. That pair of jean wouldn’t fit anymore, …… For example, This is a major problem that Office workers who spend practically the entire day on office desks  face, leading to weight around the waist.
  • Loud annoying snores while sleeping due to Sleep apnea. A Condition , where irregular breathing can disturb your sleep.

For instance, If your partner complains that you snore every night, (and never used to before), pay attention . You may have SLEEP APNEA. 

Fat accumulation around the neck, narrows the airway leading to shallow breathing or pauses in breathing. This is because there is decreased oxygen in the blood.
The most common cause of sleep apnea is excess weight and obesity.

A significant increase in appetite is a possible symptom of weight gain. More so, if you are specifically craving for desserts and sweets.

Having extra body weight can make you stressed and depressed, thus making you want to turn to food for comfort and solace.

When stressed and depressed, the adrenal glands release the hormone cortisol. This in turn, leads to the increase in appetite.

  • Regular Activities, Take Your Breath Away.
    Activities like stair climbing, doing grocery shopping, and even cooking, leave you panting for breath.

Extra fat in your system, causes fatigue and tiredness. Also, your respiratory capacity for muscle function decreases.

Obesity and Overweight, are most times, friends with stretch marks. Stretch marks are fine lines or stripes on the skin caused from skin expansion . They usually have a different hue from the surrounding skin.

Cellulite on the other hand, is dimpled skin as a result of lumpy fat deposits underneath the skin.
Extra fat can lead the tissue under your skin to stretch. Therefore, it loses its elasticity more easily.

Some people tend to get stretch marks at the slightest gain of weight. Sudden appearance of stretch marks on your skin, is a sure sign you’re gaining weight.

  • Hurting Joints;

Excess weight can add extra pressure on joints. On the other hand, this wears down the tissue around them.

Moving first becomes uncomfortable, then painful.

The heavier you become, the more your joints will suffer, specifically the knees, back, and hips.

  • Sore Feet;
    Obesity and Overweight sores your feet easily. Take note that your feet carry the weight of your entire body. Moreover, excess weight will wear your feet out, and they get sore and swollen.

The swelling is due to the buildup of fluid in the tissues. This fluid collects mostly in the feet.

Too much weight gain, attracts a multitude of side effects, which are:

Neurological. 

Overweight people are prone to get headaches, stroke, dementia, vision loss from diabetes complications, brain tumors, and diabetic neuropathy.

Psychological

Contributing to depression, anxiety, unnecessary stress, and eating disorders. 

Respiratory ;

 Respiratory side effects including asthma, sleep apnea, pulmonary embolism, and pulmonary hypertension.

Urological;

leading to possible kidney cancer and diabetic kidney disease.

Circulatory;

 High blood pressure, high cholesterol, irregular heartbeat, and atherosclerosis. In addition, there’s also the possibility of heart attack, heart failure, poor circulation, leg and ankle swelling, blood clots, peripheral artery disease, and certain lymph node cancers.

Muskuloskeletal;

Overweight individuals can suffer from arthritis (especially the hips, knees, and ankles), low back pain, and vertebral disk disease.

Gastrointestinal;

Reflux disease, esophageal cancer, colon cancer, colon polyps, fatty liver disease, Liver cirrhosis, gallstones, liver cancer, and gallbladder cancer.

Pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

Nutritional; Vitamin and mineral deficiencies. 

Reproductive; Lastly, are the reproductive side effects. Women, can experience irregular menstruation, infertility, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Likewise for men, they could experience erectile dysfunction, infertility, and prostate cancer.

Treatment of Obesity and Overweight.

Obesity treatments have two objectives:

1. To achieve a healthy weight.

2. To maintain that healthy weight.

Obese individuals, are often discouraged, thinking they have to lose a lot of weight before any health benefits are experienced. This is not true.

Any obese person who loses just five to ten per cent of body weight will have significant improvement in health -. Mathematically, this would mean a loss of between 12-25 pounds for an obese person who weighs 250 pounds.

It is noteworthy, that a small drop in weight is a good start and a great achievement. Weight loss gurus, have discovered that, obese people who lose weight slowly and constantly, say one or two pounds each week, are more successful in keeping their weight down when they have reached their target weight.

Above all, Successful and permanent weight loss is best achieved by ; increased physical activity, changing how and when you eat. Lifestyle, and modifying your eating behavior is also important . Some patients may be prescribed medication, while others might undergo weight-loss surgery.
